About Cyma Furniture Design and Scott Sober

Cyma Furniture Design is a one-man studio owned and operated by me, Scott Sober.  I received my degree in Furniture Design in 1991 from “The School for American Craftsman” at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY.
My goal from the start has been to build furniture of heirloom quality to meet all of my clients needs.  My furniture is built to last.  I design furniture “with” my clients to assure they are getting exactly what they want.  I design around the environment that the furniture will reside in to create harmony.  I may take details from other pieces in the room and incorporate them into the piece.  If someone wants a totally different piece, I can do that also.

My personal design influences are Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mission – Arts and Crafts, and Asian Furniture and Architecture.

I work primarily with domestic hardwoods and veneers like Maple, Ash, Cherry, Walnut, and Oak.  If a client request an exotic or unusual species, I do my best to accommodate them.  I choose materials based on what would be most appropriate to the piece i.e. all solid wood construction or a mix of solid and veneer.  When making solid wood pieces like tables and chairs, I use traditional construction techniques like mortise and tenons to maximize the strength of the joints.  My finishes are chosen to suit the use of the piece and to enhance the beauty of the wood.

Most of my clients are people who have been looking for furnishings and are unable to find exactly what they want in retail stores.  They may find something close but it may be too large or small, not in the wood they would like, or the construction is not as sound as it could be.  They may not be happy with the style available or want something unusual, perhaps more specific to their needs.

These are the issues I deal with daily with my clients.  I work closely with my clients to workout these issues to come up with a design they will enjoy.

It does cost more to have a custom piece of furniture designed and made but you get exactly what you want instead of settling for less.

Please feel free to E-mail me with questions or comments about my furniture and web site.

Sincerely,
